An unprecedented semester for all of us has presented us with new challenges and most definitely, new opportunities. This semester was carried out during the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) which lead to a new way of carrying out Studio, a new way of analyzing a site, a new way of discussing and collaborating and also a new way of presenting.

Project 1

This is an urban intervention proposal at a waterfront site in Kuala Terengganu, designed to engage and delight the users. According to David Pinder, urban intervention is about “intervening in urban spaces so as to question, refunction and contest prevailing norms and ideologies, and to create new meanings, experiences, understandings, relationships and situations,” (Source: Wikipedia).

RADAS

Urban Intervention - Pavilion Design Proposal

As a pavilion designed to be placed along the Pesisir Payang. RADAS sits perpendicularly to the newly completed Pasar Payang in the heart of Kuala Terengganu, the northern part of Malaysia. The pavilion was designed with a goal to create awareness among the locals and tourist about the environment.

Site Analysis

An in-depth study of the proposed site in Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia. The proposed site is an amalgamation of 3 different lots. It is currently occupied by the Bangunan MARA, a parking lot, a small undeveloped lota and a few single storey shop lots. It is bound by 3 roads namely Jalan Masjid Abidin, Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin and Jalan Tok Lam.

The intention of the architect is recreating the visual perception as well as fulfilling the missing element for instance, common area without any change on the structural design. The aesthetic of the building is created without any ornamentation, only by organizing the local element and re – coding the remaining finishing.

To design a hostel, a space for guests’ social interaction plays a major role. In BED ONE BLOCK HOSTEL, not only the common area but also in each dormitory, social space was created for guests to share and relax.

This is the final project for this semester. We were tasked to design a green hotel in Kuala Terengganu within walking distance to the important landmarks of the city such as the Istana Maziah, Pasar Payang and Bukit Puteri, and adjacent to the Kuala Terengganu waterfront.

A hotel proposal in Kuala Terengganu inspired by the interweaving of Songket that translated into a hotel that interweaves the local culture and architecture with the new and more foreign elements such as green roofs and atriums.
